Out of the Darkness

Winter Lantern Procession and Show

Big Salmon made in Smithers in 2016 for "Into the Current" lead by Miriam Colvin, Ewa Sniatycka and Cathy Stubington of Runaway Moon. We created two similar Giant Spawning Salmon Lanterns for this show at our Kingfisher Hall workshops and at Grindrod School.

A Celebration of the Lifecycle of the Salmon

Many joined us to come "Out of the Darkness", our Winter Lantern Procession happened on Sunday Feb 20th, 2022 in Enderby. We joined in a celebration of the Lifecycle of the Salmon with our co-sponsor the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre and shone the light in our community on a special BC Family Day Weekend Sunday.

Many brought lanterns and joined in the procession along the Shuswap River. This inspired the imagination and sense of wonder as one listened for the “soundscape” while enjoying the visual feast of lanterns, predator species and more under a moonlit snow scape, ending with hot chocolate and a shadow show bonus!

We gathered at the Maud Street parking lot between the Red Apple store and The Small Axe Roadhouse on Cliff Ave by the bridge. At about 7 pm we proceeded north along the Riverwalk almost to its end at the Riverside RV Park Campsite by the boat launch at the east end of Kildonan Ave.

ABOUT THE LIGHTEN UP / OUT OF THE DARKNESS LANTERN PROCESSION PROJECT

Runaway Moon Theatre
, in association with Kingfisher Interpretive Centre, planned this special event to help people through the doldrums. “Out of the Darkness” Winter Lantern Celebration and Show took place in Enderby on the evening of Sunday February 20th at 7 pm on BC Family Day weekend. The event was a celebration of the Lifecycle of the Salmon, and a new evolution of the popular Floating Lantern Celebration which has often happened in September but has been made impractical by changes in climate.

We were excited to try this new format Lantern event where lantern makers get to carry their own lantern in the procession and then take it home (that was hard to do when we did it on the river).

Lantern making for “Out of the Darkness” Winter Lantern Procession took place for almost a month at our “Lighten Up” workshops at Enderby Memorial Tower, the Salmon Arm Gallery, the Armstrong Senior’s Centre, Kingfisher Community Hall and the Enderby Arts Centre. And we were especially happy to engage our local students with many workshops at our local schools and thank them for their enthusiastic response.

ABOUT OUR TEAM
The project was led by our Artistic Director Cathy Stubington, guest artist Meghan Budd (instagram.com/openarted) and Stage Manager Cara Nunn, with Carolyn Uher from our partner organization, Kingfisher Interpretive Centre Society dealing with logistics and much more. Long-time Runaway Moon collaborator Murray MacDonald joined us to create and lead the soundscape.

We thank the Enderby and District Arts Council, the Armstrong Seniors Centre, the Armstrong Spallumcheen Chamber of Commerce, the Salmon Arm Arts Centre, the Kingfisher Community Hall, the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre and the Province of BC for their support and, in some cases, their hospitality in hosting our Workshops.
