Tuwitames - Thanks for your support!

Picture
The Splatsin Language Program and Runaway Moon Theatre would like to thank everyone who was involved with our collaborative community production of Tuwitames.  There were many positive comments from our audience, comments like “Tuwitames was amazing, moving, visually stunning and a wonderful teaching tool.”  This could not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of our directors, actors, stage management and production crew (costumes, props, music, sound and lighting) as well as the financial, food and production site support we received.

We would like to express special thanks to James Fagan Tait (Director), Dorothy Jenkins (Stage Manager), Tim Cardinal (Production Manager), Renae Morriseau (Musical Director), Leah Goldie (Assistant Director), Erin Macklem (Costume Designer) and Catherine Wright (Production Assistant) who all travelled long distances to share their expertise with us.

We are grateful to and would like to acknowledge the funding support of the Canada Council for the Arts Artists and Communities (Theatre), Canada Council for the Arts Elders and Youth Program, BC Arts Council Youth Engagement Pilot Program, Province of BC, BC Hydro, Splatsin Band Education Department, Neskonlith Band Health Department, McLeod Insurance, and the Enderby Care Society (Twice But Nice).  We also thank the Enderby Lions Club and the Enderby and District Arts Council (EDAC) for their generous support of our Into The Woods summer camp for those students who needed help with their tuition.

We also acknowledge and thank the Splatsin Tsm7aksaltn Teaching Society for the use of the Day Care and Cultural Grounds; Curly Willow Farms, Armstrong Farmer’s Market, Cliff’s Restaurant, Armstrong Tim Horton’s, Armstrong Askew’s Deli and Pilgrims’ Produce for helping to keep a large cast and crew fed; Aaron and Deanna Leon for ensuring the production was archived through photos and video.

In closing, we would like to also say thank you to Enderby, Armstrong, Vernon and Salmon Arm newspapers and radio stations for their generous and helpful support in helping us to make sure everyone knew!

Mythology and truth, humour and heartbreak, music and magic, for all ages!

We thank everyone for their incredible support of Tuwitames (too-weet-a-miss), which ran
Wednesday August 6th to Sunday August 10, 2014.  Tuwitames was a co-production of Runaway Moon Theatre and the Splatsin Language and Cultural Program.

Tuwitames (pronounced too-weet-a-miss, which means "he/she is growing up") will take place in the Cultural Yard of Splatsin Tsm7aksaltn (Teaching Centre), located on Canyon Road just behind the Quilakwa Super Save Gas Station & Store on the south end of Enderby on Highway 97.

In this extraordinary production, teachings and values from Secwepemc culture are shared with stories both traditional and contemporary, and combined with the journey of a young man returning home to find out about his connection to the land and his people.

Vancouver Director James Fagan Tait, and Splatsin cultural historian Rosalind Williams, direct a cast of over 60 community members from age 3 to 83, from Splatsin, Neskonlith and Adams Lake Bands, and from nearby communities.  Behind the scenes we have a host of theatre professionals from across the province (and beyond) to design and carry out the vision.  Runaway Moon Theatre's Artistic Director Cathy Stubington is leading the collaborative artistic design of the play.  A large team is busy creating an incredible array of masks, costumes, puppets and props, both in native traditions and fantastical.  Music Director Renae Morriseau (of “North of 60" fame) will also be performing an ancient Secwepemc lament.

Rosalind Williams has been speaking with Splatsin Elders and documenting stories, history and tradition for over thirty years, and this is an opportunity to share her efforts towards Secwepemc language and cultural regeneration with the First Nations community and the general public.

The play is a collaboration of three playwrights: Rosalind Williams, James Fagan Tait and Cathy Stubington.

From heart–wrenching tragedy to rollicking humour, Tuwitames has something to say to everyone, about who we are and how we can relate to each other and to this place on Earth.

Mythology and truth, humour and heartbreak, music and magic, for all ages.
